On the edge of the Sahara Desert, ten months pass each year without a single drop of rain.

“Why are there no flowers here?” “Because flowers do not belong here.”

Inès refused to accept this answer, she dug a hole in her courtyard and planted her first seed. It died.
The second died as well. Her neighbors called her mad.

On the day her mother said, “Flowers do not belong here,”Inès saw her crouching in the yard
Whispering to a withered plant, she could not hear clearly. Drawing closer, she heard her mother saying, “I am sorry.”

She told no one. She simply kept on digging.

For fifteen years, head bowed every day under a white headscarf, she bent over the sand.
To every single seed, she whispered: “You can live here.”
To every single seed, she whispered: "You can live here” not a command, nor a prayer, but a promise.

On the day the first rose bloomed, she simply crouched down and gazed at it for a long, long time.

Now, her garden flourishes on the edge of the desert. No one knows how she accomplished it.
They only know that day after day, she steps into the blossoms, as if walking into a cathedral grown from the sand.

A traveler once asked her, “How did you do it?”

She replied, “I accomplished nothing. I simply refused to accept that they did not belong.”
She bent down, her fingertips gently brushing a petal, the wind blew, resting sand softly upon the tip of a leaf.
